Mulches reduce aphid-borne viruses and whiteflies in cantaloupe

A viruses and silverleaf whitefly can completely devastate cantaloupe crops, causing serious economic losses to growers. The California Melon Research Advisory Board (2003) lists the management and control of aphid-borne viruses and whitefly as a top pest-management research priority. At the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center (KREC), we studied the use of reflective plastic mulch and stra...

Tree-Ramsey numbers

We denote by r'( G I , G2 ) the ramsey number of two graphs and G2 • If Tp+l is a tree of order p + 1 which is not a star, and if jJ is not a divisor of the positive integer q 1, then we shall show that r(Tp+b ](l,q) ::; p + q 1, and we shall describe some trees and stars for which equality holds. Furthermore. we detf'rmine the ramsey numbers r(T;+l' Tq*+l) for p, q ~ 4, where T~ denotes a tree...

Parallel Tree-Contraction and Fibonacci Numbers

We show a new property of Fibonacci numbers which is related to the analysis of a very simple and natural parallel tree contraction algorithm. We show that the size of the smallest tree which requires t contractions equals exactly the t-th Fibonacci number. This implies the sharp bound on the number of iterations of the tree contraction algorithm. We contribute also to combinatorics of trees. P...

Sclerotia Formation and Toxin Production in Large Sclerotial Aspergillus flavus Isolates from Kenya

We studied the relationship between sclerotia formation and aflatoxin production by Aspergillusflavus strains isolated from maize kernels from Nandi County. Isolates recovered from maize kernels were tested for their ability to form sclerotia on different growth media. PCR analysis was done on the isolates to detect 2 structural genes, aflD and aflQ, involved in aflatoxin biosynthesis pathway. ...
